Grandparents: Showing You Care
By Kristen Guthrie
There is so much to be gained from our grandparents if we only take a little time in our lives to discover it. There are so many precious stories and interesting things that can be found, if you show that you care enough to listen.
If your grandparents are still living, you have a wonderful gift given to you, and you need to take hold of it, before it’s gone and you regret not having done it sooner. Have you ever felt when you’ve visited your grandparents that you don’t have much in common, and there really isn’t anything you can talk about? Asking them about what life was like when they were growing up is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your grandparents better, and find that you share so much more in common than you ever thought before!
Why?
Psalm 16:6b: “…indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me.”
It is important to your grandparents that their lives and stories are important to you. Yes, chances are that in the process of visiting, Grandpa will tell the story about the time he caught the winning bass in the county fishing tournament again, but if you’re respectfully patient, you’ll gain a host of other neat stories you’ve never even heard before. I know that as of a couple years ago, my family and I knew virtually nothing about my Papaw’s childhood. But one Thanksgiving when I started asking questions, he really opened up, and there were so many fun stories to hear! My Grandmother had always seemed to feel that her life wasn’t interesting enough for anyone to know about, but when she learned that it was important to me, she suddenly realized what a good life she’d really had.
How?
Proverbs 18:15: “The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.”
As the family historian, you must take the opportunities when they’re available – while helping Grandma with the dishes, camping in the backyard, driving quite a distance together, or sitting in the living room on a rainy day. But don’t just listen – write the stories down! If it isn’t possible to write while they’re talking, be sure to do it as soon as you can, so that you don’t forget how the stories go. If they’re comfortable with it, you can even have a tape recorder running, so that you can copy it down a little bit at a time, later.
What?
There are a lot of questions that you can ask, but remember to be polite and considerate. How did you get to school? What was your favorite subject? When did you become a Christian? What chores did you have growing up? What were your favorite things to do? How did your life change because of World War II? What is your favorite Christmas memory? But don’t ask them all at once! Do it a little bit at a time, and relish each minute.
When?
Proverbs 10:7a: “The memory of the just is blessed…”
Learning about your grandparents will be so special to you now, and priceless for your children later. And you’ll find that many of these same techniques can help you while visiting a nursing home or carrying on a conversation with an elderly church member. It’s all about showing that you care.
I hope that this will help encourage some of you young ladies to strive to have a closer relationship with your grandparents and get to know them better, before it is too late, and you wish you could just have another opportunity.
For those of you who have already lost your grandparents, you can take the time to “adopt” someone elderly and lonely in your church as a grandparent in the Lord. It will mean so much to them, and there’s so much that they can teach you. If you’ll only spend a little time, you might make a difference in someone’s life.
I thought that you might enjoy this article! I did! My grandmothers are such a blessing to me!
Blessings,
~RJ

Review of Hand-Knit Mayu Alpaca
Mayu Had-Knit Alpaca is a unique company that has plenty of things! In fact it sells a number of things! But some of my favorite things about it, is that they are Eco-Friendly, and their products are made from 100% Alpaca yarn, they give back to Charity, are socially conscious, and they are Fair Trade. Today I am going to share three of my favorite products.
The 2 colored caplet: This fashionable caplet is every woman’s dream! It comes in 3 colors; my personal favorite is the black and white caplet
I love how it stands out… The caplets are so beautiful! Not to mention the elegance that they show off! They are $139. A bit pricey, but well worth it!
The knitted floral scarf: This elegant scarf complements any outfit and goes beautifully with anything! It also comes in two colors but, again, I still prefer the black and white combination.
This goes lovely with the Fitted Floral Hat! And it goes well with the The 2 colored caplet!
The long eyelet hoodie: This fashionable sweater is something that every woman needs! If you don’t have one of these, then you need one! It is soooooo beautiful, and so elegant. It comes in 6 colors! So you can choose! My favorite is the Chocolate Brown hoodie. But you may like the Kelly Green, Red, Black, Cream, Charcoal Gray or even Eggplant Purple.
Please be sure to check out Mayu’s Blog, Twitter, Facebook, and Shop!
Blessings,
~RJ

Review of Goat Milk Soap
Recently I found out about Laurel Fork Farm. I love their products! They are so great!
- All the soaps are super soft on your skin. It is even safe for ladies who are allergic to scents and such, which I thought was terrific, since I have very sensitive skin!
- Some of my favorites soaps, are the Vanilla, Blackberry Tea, Blueberry, Chocolate Milk, and Mint.

- Another plus is that all the soaps can coordinate with the lotion!
- The lotion is just perfect! It keeps your hands soft and looking great! It does not wash off and stays on all day! (which I loved)
- They have a lot more scents, lotions, salves, and much more! Be sure to check it out! And you can’t say that goat soap can’t be fashionable!!

Recipe Of The Week #18
I have a delicious recipe to share! We bought some Libby’s Pumpkin, and there was a recipe on the can for a Pumpkin Roll. Since we are a big family, pumpkin rolls are a bit to much “to do,” so I simply altered the recipe to make it suitable for our family!
(Note: This recipe is very easy, and can easily be reduced to fit your family. Tripling, on the other hand, is not advised!)
Pumpkin Bread
1 1/2 cups of white flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 cup cane sugar (I used 1 cup cane and 1 cup brown)
6 eggs
2 cups of canned pumpkin (or your own pumpkin puree)
Preheat Oven to 375 degrees F. Mix eggs and sugar in a bowl. Add pumpkin. Beat. Then in another bowl sift the dry ingredients together. Add to pumpkin mixture. Spread into large pan. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Let cool. if desired, top with cream-cheese frosting. Enjoy!
Cream Cheese Frosting:
1 16oz. package of cream cheese
2-3 TBSP of whole or 2% milk.
1 TBSP vanilla
4 1/2 cups of icing sugar
Beat till smooth and creamy. (You can double the sugar, milk, and vanilla, and mix some more to make for 2 sheet cakes.)
Enjoy!

Contests, Seasons, Update, Virtuous Girlhood | Comments (3)Want Shiny Hair?
Want shiny hair? But don’t want to waste money on conditioners? Then make your own with 3 ingredients in your house! Just follow this recipe!
Start by boiling a kettle full of water. When water is boiled, pour it into a bowl and add rosemary leaves. Then strain the rosemary water into another container. Add a few drops of rose essential oil. Pour mixture into a suitable container with a flip top. After washing your hair, pour the rose mixture over your hair and leave on. If you are allergic to rose, you can simply rinse your hair with cold water. But the rose water mixture works a lot better!
I originally found this on Feelin Feminine. And it worked great! It works better on darker hair but you could try it even if you have light hair!
Blessings,
R.J.
